Designing Career Development Plan
A career development plan is an orderly and purposeful method for reviewing where you are in your career, deciding where the person want to be and using smart goal setting to get there.

A career development plan that meets the career objectives of candidate may begin with these 5 steps:

1. Know Where the person is
Starting point is the place where the person is at now

What has influenced career choices of the person?

How did the person get to his current career track?

Analyse the educational and professional qualifications, work skills, work experience, interests and hobbies of the person.

2.Know Where the person Want To Be
This is the career destination of the person.

Where do the person see himself in one year, five years, 10 years?

If the person had the money, time and connections to find his/her dream career, what would he/she be?

How have the person's qualifications, experience, skills and values served him/her at work?

If the person weren't hindered by an inability to make good decisions or a lack of self-confidence, who would he/she be?

3.Know What It Will Take To Get There
This step involves reality testing. It is about narrowing the gap between 1 and 2 through research and informed and well-balanced decision making.

Suppose the person want to make money working online. He/she come across an ad on the Internet claiming that he/or can make money online "fast", "free" or "now".

Before the person get excited at the prospect of instant riches, you need to do some reality testing.

One of the first things you would ask is: how do you know if it is a legitimate work from home opportunity or a scam?

Criteria of the person would be credible proof, either in the form of testimonials or statistics or real-life individuals whose success is beyond doubt.

One should not base your decision making on a mere marketing claim.

There are other considerations.

Think about how much time and money the person is prepared to invest. Have the person got sufficient resources to support the search or are the resources limited?

Is the person prepared to make changes and sacrifices if he/she have to?

4.Put It In Print
Once the person have 1, 2 and 3 in place, it's time to summarize his/her career development plan and put it in writing.

Set out both the big picture and all the detailed in-between action steps that will take the person to his/her ultimate career goal.

There is power in the printed word. When the person's goals are in the face daily, he/she can see them and it's easier to commit to them.

5.Remember Nike
If one want his/her career development plan to be more than a piece of paper, they will have to Just Do It. Otherwise, it will be just another academic exercise, another good intention filed away in your Someday folder.

From experience, the first step can seem especially hard. Expect the hump, but do not let it defeat you.

Keep working at the career development plan and making it work for them. When those small successes start to add up, they will confirm that the persons were right all along, and will be motivated to keep going.
