Branding and Designing Business needs high level of technical skill, creativity and exceptional ideas.

Branding
Brand is a Name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one seller's good or service as distinct from those of other sellers. A brand can take many forms, including a name, sign, symbol, color combination or slogan. The word branding began simply as a way to differentiate and give identity to different product of different companies. It affects the personality of a product, company or service. It is defined by a perception, good or bad, that your customers or prospects have about you. A concept brand is a brand that is associated with an abstract concept, like breast cancer awareness or environmentalism, rather than a specific product, service, or business. A commodity brand is a brand associated with a commodity. Got milk? is an example of a commodity brand.

Designing
Designing is an intellectual, cognitive activity that involves both the human and the computer / technology. Designing is the process of converting information that characterizes the needs and requirements for a product into knowledge about a product.

Features of Design
Human endeavors (talent, experience, practice, prejudice)
Design involves creative, innovative, and original thought
Open-ended
Restricted by resources
Designers may have different "value" systems
Designers have to make decisions under uncertainty and risk.

Design as a Process
Recognize the problem
Get background to comprehend the need/problem/opportunity
Define the problem and identify objectives (criteria) and constraints
Develop alternative solutions/ideas
Evaluate alternative solutions
Select the best alternative
Implement the solution
Evaluate the results

Design Types
Original Design - an original solution principle is determined for a desired system and used to create the
design of a product.

Adaptive Design - an existing design is adapted to different conditions or tasks; thus, the solution principle remains the same but the product will be sufficiently different so that it can meet the changed tasks that have been specified.

Variant Design - the size and/or arrangement of parts or subsystems of the chosen system are varied. The desired tasks and solution principle are not changed.

Descriptive vs. Prescriptive Models

Descriptive models
Describe the segments of activities that typically occur in designing (how design is done)
Heuristic approach with no guarantee of success
Emphasize generating a solution concept early in the process.

Prescriptive model
Prescribe a better or more appropriate pattern of activities (how design should be done).
Offer more algorithmic, systematic procedure
Emphasize more analytical work to understand the requirements before generating the solution concepts.

Pahl and Beitz's Design Model

Clarification of the task collection of information about the requirements to be embodied in the solution and also about the constraints.

Conceptual design establishment of function structures, the search for suitable solution principles and their combination into concept variants.

Embodiment design engineering a solution principle by determining the general arrangements and preliminary shapes and materials of all components. Embodiment design is sometimes called preliminary design.

Detail design all the details of the final design are specified and manufacturing drawings and documentation are produced.

Basic Structure of Prescriptive Model
Analysis Listing of all design requirements and the reduction of these to a complete set of logically related performance specifications.

Synthesis Finding possible solutions for each individual performance specification and building up complete designs from these with least possible compromise.

Evaluation A process of assessing the degree to which a solution satisfied that goals that were originally stated.
